Carbon Monoxide: Our Safety Tips

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly if not detected in time. It is produced when fuel is burned, such as in a gas furnace, fireplace, or stove.

To protect yourself and your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide, it’s important to follow these safety tips:

1. Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Install a detector on each level of your home, including outside each sleeping area. Test them regularly and replace batteries at least once a year.

2. Keep Vents Clear

Keep all vents and chimneys clear of snow, leaves, and other debris to ensure proper ventilation. Blocked vents can cause fumes to build up inside your home.

3. Proper Ventilation

Make sure that all fuel-burning appliances, such as your furnace, water heater, and stove, are properly vented to the outside. Never use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.

4. Regular Maintenance

Have your fuel-burning appliances, chimneys, and vents inspected and cleaned by a professional at least once a year. This can help prevent  leaks and ensure that they are working properly.

5. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms

It is important to know the symptoms, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If you or someone in your home experiences these symptoms, get fresh air immediately and seek medical attention.

6. Evacuation Plan

Have an evacuation plan in place in case of a carbon monoxide leak. Make sure that everyone in your home knows the plan and how to get out safely.

Carbon monoxide can be a serious threat to your health and safety, but by following these safety tips, you can protect yourself and your family. Be sure to take safety seriously and take the necessary precautions to prevent leaks and keep your home safe.
